Summary of this Book...
This book is basically set in the marshes and nearby towns of North Carolina and follows the life of a young girl who is slowly abandoned by all her family, and never accepted by the majority of people who should help. It follows the intense sorrows, incredible loves, and terrible times experienced by that girl. It's a novel that crosses several genres, which is usually difficult, and also switches years most of them over a half-century ago. Normally, that would doom a novel, but this author makes those shifts without so much as grinding a gear.
This type of Book is good for...
I would say almost anyone, but knowing the setting a bit helps. Even then, once you catch the local lingo, there isn't very much not to like.
I especially liked... | ||
How her love of the land eventually pays off. Not everyone gets to live where they want and do what they love.
I didn't like... | ||
It was hard at first to envision such a young child on her own, but once you get the full picture of her getting some minor help, it works. I'm still not sure it would be possible today.
When I finished reading this Book I wanted to...
Research the author. | ||
This Book made me feel...
All sorts of ways! There simply isn't one emotion for this book. I felt sad, happy, angry, and many other emotions. The mark of a good book, I suppose.
The author of this Book...
This was a first novel. I hope more are coming with the same kind of punch.
I recommend this Book because...
It is very well written. The setting and characters come alive, and it can really make you feel. That's my take.
