This is a coming-of-age novella about three brothers growing up in a dysfunctional family. It’s a very character-driven book, succinctly told primarily from the perspective of the youngest brother. It discusses their daily lives from young childhood, including the trials and tribulations of their family, their parents’ jobs, the chaos in their home, and poverty. The story follows the brothers as they grow up with emphasis on the younger years.

People who enjoy slow burn stories that are built around character development and don’t shy away from stories of family chaos and abuse.

The pacing of the story and the relationship between the brothers. The writing is very engaging and can be brutal at times given the subject matter.

I would have liked more insight into how the brothers felt about their family, especially the older brothers, though it makes sense that from the younger brother’s perspective, it would be difficult for him to know exactly how they felt.

The author did a great job of building realistic characters. It’s very likely Torres was drawing inspiration from his real life.
