Summary of this Book...
Elizabeth Bennet and her sisters are in a precarious situation - their father's estate is entailed and can only be passed on to a male heir. Should their father pass, they will be poor and at the mercy of their cousin. It is in their best interest that at least one of the sisters marries well... but this is easier said than done. When a gentleman moves to the area and brings a friend, Elizabeth learns that hasty judgements can be flawed; not everyone is what they seem at first glance.
This type of Book is good for...
People who love history and romance.
I especially liked... | ||
I liked that none of the characters are perfect. Each has their own flaws, and it's how they overcome them (or fail to even recognise them) that matters. I also enjoyed the social commentary, and the insights the book offers into the time period in which it was written.
When I finished reading this Book I wanted to...
Read more works by Jane Austen.
This Book made me feel...
I felt charmed by this novel. It's well-written, the characters are well-developed, it has a good pace, and brought me plenty of smiles. It made me think of what life was like a couple of centuries ago, and how I would have fared in those days.
The author of this Book...
The author of this book has an interesting writing style. She sometimes works her own views of the characters and their actions into her writing. It's cleverly done, and can be quite amusing.
I recommend this Book because...
It's a lovely romance with engaging characters. Also, it's an interesting piece of writing from a historical perspective. It shows the effects of class on society, and the vulnerability of women at the time the novel was written.
Further Comments... | ||
If you love witty historical fiction, this novel is worth a read. There is a realism woven through the story that I found rather intriguing. Pride and Prejudice is not just a romance novel; Austen examines various types of relationships, from those between family members and friends, to practical marriages, hasty marriages, and the kind of relationship that develops with genuine respect and understanding.
