A wonderfully well told story about a seventeen year old girl who had a car accident and is stuck with a limp, who moves out to her grandparents ranch and is taught by a fine young man to ride and conquer her fears and insecurities when she insists on adopting an untamed mare with a bad heritage.

People who love the outdoors, horses, adventures, etc. Young and old will enjoy it.

The balance between showing and telling. The descriptions of the horses, scenery and settings are accurate, detailed and beautiful, and we get an up close and personal look at the heroine Laurie, her thoughts, feelings, struggles, and the family that supports her.

I don't think the chapter where the hunters shot down three horses, including a mother and baby, was justified. It was superfluous, adding nothing but a briefly dealt with tragedy to the story.

Did a good job either researching or using her experience.

It is quite realistic, with a balance of sad and happy, and it also isn't a dumb romance story. The relationship between Laurie and David is amazing, a true friendship with ups and downs, and his skills with horses are really something. And the background worry about Laurie's father off somewhere doing dangerous journalism work in a war zone adds a faint touch of faraway drama.

I really enjoyed this novel, start to finish.
