Finished my last book for the year late on New Year's Eve after getting back from a dinner with friends. This book was a Christmas gift from the kids; it was on my Amazon wish list, mostly because I wasn't sure if I would like it or not, and probably wasn't going to buy it for myself. Overall, I thought it was a decent book. I'd say that the "10 things" on the author's list are not exactly revelations to anyone who's been around Christianity for any length of time. It feels more geared toward skeptics or people who have assumptions about what Christianity is, and dispelling those myths. Other than that, thought, it was a well-written book. There were anecdotes and examples, but not too many and they didn't go on for too long. There was a good mix of advice and perspective, and a good use (but not overuse) of Bible excerpts to reinforce the points being made. I'm actually happy that the book was only 200-ish pages and cut to the chase quickly; it's really easy for authors to pad their page count with extended anecdotes or lots of Bible quotes and interpretations of what they mean, but this book didn't let those things distract from the lean, core message. Overall, I think this would be a great book for someone who is a skeptic, or isn't at all sure of what the real Christian message is. For people who are already Christians with more than a passing familiarity with the Bible, it's probably not going to be very revelatory. | ||
