A doctor comes to Sherlock Holmes for advice after the death of his friend whose heir is soon to arrive. The young heir receives a warning message and has a boot stolen twice, but is determined to go to his ancestral home. Holmes sends Dr. Watson to accompany the young man, with instructions to report facts back for him to theorize. As the duo spend time in an unfamiliar house, located in the isolated moors and associated with a legend, unexplained events occur, leaving them to wonder who, if anyone, they can trusted.

This book is recommended to mystery readers, especially those fond of historical mysteries.

The juxtaposition of the rational and scientific with the irrational and supernatural builds a fascinating tension as the story advances. The setting in the moors is almost another character onto itself. It is also humorous when Holmes says its bad that the truth disarranged their deductions.

However Sherlock Holmes is not a sympathetic character. While his powers of observation and ability to drawn conclusions are noteworthy, his treatment of Dr. Watson can bring to mind the phrase: With friends like this, who needs enemies?

But the novel remains a tightly woven story, building suspense alongside a worthy opponent, to a satisfying climax and resolution.
