Dana, an african-american woman who lives in the year 1976 in California with her husband Kevin who is caucasian. While celebrating a birthday she is suddenly transported in time to the antebellum South during the early 19th century. She meets and saves Rufus, the son of a slave owner. After traveling back and forth, each time the stays grow longer, more arduous, and more dangerous until it is uncertain whether or not Dana's life will end.

It is a highly symbolic book on racism; past and present. The novel is so well-written and engrossing that you would not want to put this down!
