Barbra Streisand starred in and produced this movie about a Jewish woman who disapproves of the traditional roles of men and women, at least for herself. Her father taught her to read the Talmud and together they discussed religious subjects that were meant only for males to discuss. After her father dies, Yentl cuts her hair, dresses as a man and calls herself Anshel (the name of her dead brother). She enrolls in a religious school and begins her formal education with men. Trouble for her starts when she meets and falls in love with a man named Avigdor, who is betrothed to a woman named Hadass. In a turn of events, the marriage of Avigdor and Hadass is called off and it is suggested that Yentl marry Hadass so she doesn’t marry a stranger, and so Avigdor can still be close to her. Yentl’s secret is finally revealed and the “marriage” is dissolved. Avigdor and Hadass go onto a happy life, while Yentl moves onto further study.

Excited, because Yentl didn’t just accept what was laid down for her life, but she demanded more. I applauded her.

Barbra Streisand did a great job acting in and producing this masterpiece of a movie. She portrayed well the passion of learning and discussing the facts of life, whether male or female.

It is a movie about change, about questioning the status quo and demanding more for oneself. It’s about taking your future into your own hands against all odds. It’s inspiring.
