Summary of this Book...
Two major constellations have vanished from the night sky. The old Gods are back, and that can only mean one thing: war. The balance between good and evil is under threat, and our heroes have to stop the destruction of all they hold dear.
This type of Book is good for...
People who love fantasy, dragons, and the Dungeons & Dragons game.
I especially liked...
I like the premise, and the way that it builds up to a larger story.

Raistlin makes for an interesting character. I loved his kindness and care for little Bupu.

I love the scenes with Tasslehoff, Fizban and the puffball flame who’s afraid of the dark. Tasslehoff is probably my favourite character of all. The band of heroes doesn’t take him seriously, but there’s a greater depth to him than first meets the eye.

I can’t wait to meet more of the dragons. They are nicely developed, and I like that they’re not just there for the heroes to slay. They have personality, and depth.

The female characters could be written slightly better, but I do like that Tika is a force to be reckoned with in battle, as long as she has something in her hand to hit someone with.
I didn't like...
Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman hadn’t written together before, and they were bound by the game’s quests. This is quite obvious, and it makes for a clunky read at times.

For some examples – and there’s a big spoiler alert here:

Some of the characters are very one-dimensional at this stage. Sturm is a good example of this – I know that he wishes to be a knight, just as his father was. He feels bound by the Order anyway. And, for some reason I cannot figure out, he can’t stand the mage, Raistlin.

In fact, everyone’s suspicious of Raistlin, even though he puts his life on the line for them on multiple occasions. I get that he isn’t particularly pleasant, but that doesn’t make much sense to me.

Caramon, Raistlin’s brother, is big, and strong. He’s protective of his brother and he fancies Tika. That’s about all I know about him after 472 pages.

Flint is a grumpy old dwarf, even though he’s not actually that old for a dwarf.

And for some reason everyone considers Tanis the leader, but the book doesn’t explain why.

Some relationships feel rushed. As do certain events. They’re written in a way that I know I ought to feel certain emotions, but because the story and the characters weren’t fully developed, I simply didn’t feel them.
When I finished n/a this Book I wanted to...
Read the second novel in the series: Dragons of Winter Night.
This Book made me feel...
Like I set the first step on a long journey, along with our heroes. There is a long way yet to go, but I guess I am committed now!
I recommend this Book because...
The authors had a good idea with this. There are some interesting characters, and a good build-up towards the next book in the trilogy.
I don't recommend this Book because...
You do have to have some patience, as the book is far from perfect.
