Summary of this Book...
"Welcome to Knife's Edge, Alaska, where the four Osprey brothers return from military service with shadows in their eyes and secrets in their hearts. As danger looms, new romances ignite, and these rugged men must fight for love…and survival. **This book 1 in the series was published as Knife's Edge, Alaska in Kindle Vella initially.** Brock Osprey has spent years in the rugged Alaskan wilderness, far from civilization and even farther from his past. A former Navy Seal, Brock is now the unwilling protector of Knife's Edge, a remote town with more secrets than residents. But when FBI agent Ophelia Spilazi arrives to investigate the unsolved murder of his guardian—and recent unexplained deaths in the area—Brock's carefully guarded world is thrown into chaos. Agent Ophelia Spilazi has one last chance to save her career, and Knife's Edge is her shot. The isolated town is full of secrets, and she's certain Brock knows more than he's letting on. The town's recent string of mysterious deaths only heightens her suspicion, but the more time she spends with the brooding Alaskan, the harder it becomes to ignore the dangerous chemistry between them. As a brutal storm traps them in the isolated wilderness, Brock and Ophelia's growing attraction ignites, even as shadows from their pasts threaten to tear them apart. But with a dangerous conspiracy and powerful enemies lurking in the shadows, their only hope is to trust each other—before the wilderness consumes them both." Further Comments...
Overall, I greatly enjoyed this book. The characters were strong and the good ones lovable, especially Olly (the nickname the town gave Agent Ophelia Spilazi, the heroine), Sheriff/ not Sheriff Brock Osprey (the hero), his brothers and many of the quirky town members. The killer of the boys' adoptive father surprised me in a way, but it had to be someone in the town or Brock would have accepted the Sheriff job, and it had to be either an accident or a compassionate reason, because he was loved by the whole town. I liked how the town came together to defend their own when needed. I loved the fast pace of the action scenes and the fun small town parts, like the women's wine and quilting club and the unique weather forecaster and his odd choice of living quarters. The killer of the cold case was more of a surprise to me, as was the motivation. I am certainly not an expert on FBI agent assignments, but the whole reason for Olly being in Alaska seemed like ... if it were going to be an assignment, there ought to be two agents, not one. Are they really ever sent to remote locations alone like that? When they know they'll be stuck there for months? And it seemed more like a personal favor than a real assignment, yet her whole career was on the line if she failed. That part didn't really work for me. I also think she would have had more resistance to being in a new relationship, given how her last one ended, though I guess the argument against that was Brock was just so magnetic... but one would think that an FBI agent could control themselves a bit better. Not that the romantic in me wanted her to, but the logical part of me had trouble suspending disbelief for things like that. Despite that, I definitely want to read the rest of the series and find out the other brothers' stories. I hope that there will be a book for each of the four brothers. Right now the second one is on preorder and my library doesn't yet have it listed so I can't put a hold on it (I borrowed my copy of this book from my local library), but it doesn't say anything about books three or four (there are four brothers). There were enough loose ends for at least two more books. I would have liked a bit more to be resolved regarding the unusual details of some of the killings, but I get that cliffhangers are a big marketing thing. I started reading this to get a break from a kind of boring book, and it was a great relief. There were a few parts that dragged on, made me want to skip forward, but most of the book was paced well. By the end, I was so involved with the story I had to find out the rest. Apparently, this book was previously published under a line that no longer exists, so it surprised me that it's ranking number 45 and 47 in two category places (as of the time I am writing this review, on February 11, 2025), on the Amazon best sellers list. The details are below, if you want to see. It has an average 4.6 star rating on Amazon and 4.4 on Goodreads. I'd probably give it a 4.5 there, though that's not how the system works here. Note: for personal reasons, I don't read the explicit sex scenes or the most graphic violent sections.
