Summary of this Book...
I’ve done it again and read the second book in a series without reading the first. Oh well. It didn’t matter too much as I didn’t even realise until I came to write this. I enjoyed this book. If I’m honest, the first half was a bit slow, but once the pace picked up, it really ran! I loved the character of Gary, who self-proclaims he is a shithouse. Actually, he seems like quite a good guy. Grace is my favourite character, though. She is prickly and untrusting, but actually has a giant heart and a wicked sense of humour. Gary, a solicitor living and working in London, is visited by a new client, Mr Sequence, who tells him he must not testify at an upcoming trial against some policemen. Sequence makes it clear that Gary, his girlfriend (Emily) and neighbour Grace will all be hurt if he doesn’t do as he says. Emily has just moved to Brighton to renovate and reopen the hotel her father left her in his will. Gary hadn’t been sure he wanted to move there with her, but with Sequence on his tail, he makes the break. Only, Sequence and his henchman, Brian, follow him there. They have to make sure Gary doesn’t testify or speak to the police. So, Brian is settled into the Hotel Avocado to keep an eye on Gary and Emily and make sure they do not speak to anyone. If they leave the hotel, he follows. He is always there. I enjoyed Bob Mortimer’s sense of humour. The whole book, although about a serious situation, is quite funny. The book is, in turns, mysterious, intriguing, enjoyable and bonkers! The talking pigeon?! I wasn’t sure this was necessary, although it was very Bob Mortimer. Quite bizarre! So, all in all, a good, enjoyable read. Not a work of literary genius, but it wasn’t meant to be.
