Summary of this Book...
James Herriot is a newly licensed veterinarian. He's lucky enough to get a position with a seasoned vet in Yorkshire. This book tells the story of his early days in practice. He has to get used to his new boss and his somewhat erratic moods. He has to learn that while he may have preferred to treat small pets, he doesn't really have choice in the matter and ends up being the one to call at all hours to treat cows, horses, sheep and pigs. This is the first in a series of books he has written on the subject.
This type of Book is good for...
Teens and adults interested in a good story about taking care of animals.
I especially liked... | ||
James Herriot writes personably. You can perhaps not relate to his trials and tribulations as a newly minted veterinarian in 1930s Yorkshire England, but you can relate to him as a human being just starting out in his career.
When I finished reading this Book I wanted to...
Do some research on the author's life and read the other books in the series. There is a Herriot museum in Thirsk, where he had his practice. It's on my list of places to visit.
This Book made me feel...
Life was not easy for farmers back then, nor is it now. There's a lot to be said for people who choose, by choice or by heritage, to devote their lives to farming and the animals that support the farm.
The author of this Book...
Sounds like someone I'd love to have a cup of tea with.
I recommend this Book because...
It's heartwarming and very interesting.
