Summary of this Book...
Arthur Dent is an Earthman whose house is about to be knocked down. But he has a towel and an alien friend in Ford Prefect, so when his planet is knocked down, he escapes. This is one of the funniest books I have ever read, and is in my top 3 books of all time. The humour is very British and I love it, and the interjections from the titular Guide just add to the world building without standing out. And Dent's complete bewilderment at the world he finds himself in is all too realistic.
This type of Book is good for...
People who enjoy intelligent humour, well-written stories and not being spoken down to. This is a book I know some people do not "get", but I think that says more about them or the culture they were brought up in than the book itself.
I especially liked... | ||
The humour. Even re-reading it for the third time, I laughed although I knew what was coming. It is that well-written.
I didn't like... | ||
I found the character of Zaphod Beeblebrox to be too OTT. Sometimes he just annoyed me.
The author of this Book...
Wrote a series of sequels, all of which are good or great, plus he wrote a few other books and even some non-fiction works. He was taken from the world too early.
I recommend this Book because...
It is genuinely funny and intelligent without being preachy.
Further Comments... | ||
Very few humour works of fiction have been as good as this. It is so funny on a few levels, and yet has something to say. So well done.
