Complex Numbers
A complex number is expressed in the standard form a + bi, where a and b are real numbers and i is defined by i^2 = -1 (that is, i is the square root of -1). For example, 3 + 2i is a complex number.
The bi term is often referred to as an imaginary number (though this may be misleading, as it is no more "imaginary" than the symbolic abstractions we know as the "real" numbers). Thus, every complex number has a real part, a, and an imaginary part, bi.
Complex numbers are often represented on a graph known as the "complex plane," where the horizontal axis represents the infinity of real numbers, and the vertical axis represents the infinity of imaginary numbers. Thus, each complex number has a unique representation on the complex plane: some closer to real; others, more imaginary. If a = b, the number is equal parts real and imaginary.
Very simple transformations applied to numbers in the complex plane can lead to fractal structures of enormous intricacy and astonishing beauty.
I would have to add fear to this as well: "Only by making us feel guilty can they sell us stuff to assuage that guilt."
I agree, everyone has their own "productive time" and sleeping patterns change, growing up I was an early riser no matter what time I went to bed; it worked great. Then, for whatever reason, I started sleeping later and was more productive in the evenings and into the night. Now, it's somewhere in between.
My mom would recite in the morning: "Here is dawning another new day, whilst thou let it slip useless away?" Thinking back, even if I got up and went to school, sometimes it still was a useless day.
"Only by making us feel guilty can they sell us stuff to assuage that guilt."
This might change thanks to the underconsimption(core) trend/movement that's currently circulating on social media. This trend may start with getting people to use what they've already purchased, but along the way it can help people rethink a wide variety of spending habits.
Sure, they start out eating specific types of plastic waste but soon evolve to eat every kind of plastic, waste or in use. Eventually evolving to eat any synthetic product, then evolving to eat organic substances with a very high attraction to meat, any meat. This sounds like a great sci-fi book.
On the other hand, better beer and nudity—maybe they're on to something...
