This week's study begins with a list of family names; these are all the people within the lineage of Israel (Jacob) when he moved to Egypt to be with Joseph. This also gives us insight as to Joseph's extended family. Observing the meaning of all the names, I created this list. "Meaning of names in Genesis 46:5-26" ![]() These are the families of Joseph and his brothers. I find etymology and the meaning of their names an interesting study as well as the Bible story itself. When Israel was almost to Joseph, Joseph went out to meet him. When they met, they wept on each other's shoulders for a good while. Once they finished weeping, Israel felt like he could die happy knowing Joseph was still alive. I can only imagine how it must have felt to see his son alive after presuming him dead all those years. Joseph instructed them how to speak to pharaoh saying they were in the business of cattle. Shepherds were considered an abomination to the Egyptians. https://www.thetorah.com/article/shepherds-and-eating-with-hebrews-an-abominatio... https://www.bing.com/search?q=why%20were%20shepherds%20an%20abomination%20to%20t... https://messianic-revolution.com/43-1-why-was-it-abhorrent-for-egyptians-to-eat-... From what I can get out of my web search, it was a matter of social status as the reason Shepherds couldn't associate with the Egyptians. Also, the pastureland was mainly in Goshen. However, if the said their business was cattle in general, it wasn't considered as bad as just dealing merely with sheep and goats. You can see more information on this by using the link above. Joseph took 5 men from among his brethren and presented them to the pharaoh along with his father. Pharaoh granted Joseph permission to give them of the best of the land of Egypt and to hire some of them to care for his cattle also. Israel blessed Pharoah when he met him and was 130 years old when he had moved to Egypt. One observation I make here by Israel's statement to the Pharoah is that he wasn't happy with the path his life had taken. And Jacob said unto Pharaoh, "The days of the years of my pilgrimage are an hundred and thirty years: few and evil have the days of the years of my life been, and have not attained unto the days of the years of the life of my fathers in the days of their pilgrimage.” I know I have even been disappointed in the way my own life played out. However, just like Israel, we can take comfort in the sovereignty of God, knowing he is in control, and everything will work out for our good. (Romans 8:28) Joseph gave them land and set his family up in Goshen. They grew in wealth and prospered there. Israel lived another 17 years in Egypt and died at the age of 147. During the famine, Joseph bought all the land of Egypt for Pharoah except for the Priest's land. He bought the cattle from the people too. People also sold themselves to Pharoah into slavery so they could have food to eat. So, the people had to pay a fifth part of their crops back to Pharoah. When it came close for the time that Israel should die, Joseph was told his father was sick. He brought his 2 sons to him for a blessing. Israel claimed them as his own and gave them a portion of the inheritance. Israel made Joseph promise to carry his remains out of Egypt and to not leave him there. |

Take UP Your Cross Blog Prompt: Can God's Word be used for harm instead of good? Explain. I believe God's word is like any weapon that can be used for good or evil intentions. Ephesians says it is the sword of the Spirit. We need to be careful how we use it and weald it. Prayer Prompt: Pray for God to give you spiritual protection from temptation and attacks from the enemy. Dear God, Protect us from yielding to temptation and being drawn away by the lust of our flesh. Protect us from evil and the attacks of the enemy. In Jesus' name, Amen Scripture Writing Prompt: Ephesians 6:11-13 11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. 13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. I had to show some alien friends how to make their bed in their Spaceship and help them tidy up a bit, on my way back home, I ran across this.

Prompt: Summer what do you think about the summer season, and/or how would you personify summer in a story or poem? I usually love the summer as long as I have air conditioning at my disposal. Summer is just hot, plain and simple. ![]() |

Take UP Your Cross Blog Prompt: When it comes to sin and good deeds too, do you think your motives are important? Does God take it into consideration when you are judged for your works on Earth? Why? I think God definitely considers the motive of the heart even more so than the action itself. I believe he is more concerned with the matters of the heart than anything physical. Prayer prompt: Pray that the heart of those involved in witchcraft would be turned toward God and they would repent of their sins to Follow Christ. On this day in 1940 Richard and Maurice McDonald open the 1st McDonald's restaurant in San Bernardino, California Hard to believe it's been around 85 years! How old were you when you first went to a McDonalds? What was your favorite item on the menu? Do you still go to McDonalds? I don't remember my first trip to McDonald's. I know it was after 1976 when I was born. I've always loved the chicken nuggets. I occasionally still eat there when I need a quick and less expensive meal. Prompt: "Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle." Plato Write about this in your Blog entry today. This is a true statement, I think. We never know what the other person is experiencing. I keep things to myself even when it comes to my best friend. She won't know until later when I feel like I can tell her that I was even trying to process something, even things from the past. Sometimes there are layers of hurt and it takes layers of forgiveness and acceptance. Sometimes I think I've processed something, then another layer is revealed and here we go again. You just never know what someone else is going through. ![]() |

The most exciting thing I encountered on Monday... What drains your energy in your life? And in what ways can you stay grounded in stressful situations? Oh My! Do we really want to go here? LOL Health conditions, complainers, rude and ignorant people, Heavy/hard work... I do enjoy hard work sometimes but it can drain me quickly, especially now that I am getting older. We won't talk bad about people by giving an explanation to that one. I have health conditions that cause me to be more tired than I should be. In order to cope, I try to get plenty of rest, listen to my body, take a walk, pray, practice gratitude, praise God, and listen to music or audio book. ![]() |
Summary of Week 8 Joseph Bible Study We ended last week with Joseph having his cup put in Benjamin's sack and having his brothers stopped and accused of stealing his silver cup. They had agreed to being searched because they did not know they had Joseph's cup and was ready to prove their innocence. They still did not know they were dealing with Joseph at this point. They just knew he was an Egyptian ruler, next in command to Pharoah himself. This week's study begins with the actual search of the brothers' bags. The brother's sacks were searched in order from eldest to youngest. I am noticing this seems to be a theme in the story of Joseph and his brothers. Obviously, the cup was found. They were taken back to face Joseph again. A side thought occurred to me when noticing birth order seems to be a big deal in the Bible. In Matthew 19:30 Jesus says, "The first shall be last." https://www.gotquestions.org/first-last-last-first.html God often chose the younger sibling to pass on his promise through. He chose Isaac over Ishmael, Jacob over Esau, David over all of his older brothers, and the list goes on and on. In general, I think it means that the way the world views things isn't always the way that God views things. It's God's chosen order that matters and not man's way of viewing things. The brothers tear their clothes as an outward sign of distress and grief. The clothes were often torn over the heart to represent a broken heart. However, God wants our heart to be torn and broken over our sin so that we can fully repent and be healed. Joel 2:11-14 ▼ See also Joel 3:14 and Revelation 22:11-12 A lot of times what happens in the physical realm is a mirror of what is happening in the spiritual realm. Do you have pests in your home? He ordered for everyone to leave the room except for his brothers while he revealed himself to them. While revealing himself, he wept so loudly that the Egyptians could hear him throughout the house of Pharoah. He told them... “Now therefore be not grieved, nor angry with yourselves, that ye sold me hither: for God did send me before you to preserve life.
