How to Read the Tarot

Begin by brewing a cup of tea,
a nervine, lemon balm or chamomile,
this is after all, your future.
A reading at the dark of the moon is best,
before the night creatures crawl
and bad humours fill the air.
Pick a circular deck, with a fairy-tale motif,
and no reversals.
Hold a question in your heart,
shuffle the cards and place them on the table.
Choose only two.
Like the ancient Israelites,
these are your seer stones, Urim and Thumimm,
black and white, yes or no.
Isn't that all you were asking?

Silence

Scientists say
in two hours of silence
mice can regenerate neurons.
At night, with two hours of silence
under the runway of the Milky Way
I strain to hear
the light balls of stars,
and the floating notes
of poinciana and magnolia blossoms.
There is no true silence here,
wind rustle, frog bustle.
My spirit remembers,
Ave Maria, gracia plenar.
Deep in my hippocampus
I hear my rodent synapses returning.

Silence

Did you know that silence can burn?
Do you feel it,
that rustle of air against your skin,
those lengthening shadows
building an altar around you,
your legacy scars
prickling with healing.
In the presence of mine enemies
I am silent
shunning the malevolent gleam
in their gaze.
No mercy.
Go silent for a moment
or a century.
Feel the burn.

An Economy of Prayer

Animism is normative consciousness.
Consciousness proceeds from animism.
Sentient beings are everywhere.
Everywhere, rocks, trees, planets are sentient
economies of prayer.
Prayer is a gifting economy.

Talismans

Once upon a time
I was brave
and I was wise
but began practicing invisibility.
Neither here,
nor never truly there.
Still I gathered
memories and talismans,
feathers, stones, shells,
pressed flowers.
With these I work a spell,
a puzzle that clatters.
My sloshing heart intones,
I am old, I am tired.
Now, make me brave,
make me wise.

Papers

I was a timid girl
and didn't like dolls
but soothed my fears
with books and paper.
In the scrap bins
of a printing shop
was a sea of color
free to carry home.
And there I made stars,
and cities and farms
nestled in imagined hills.
I wrote endless lists
of future things
to gaze upon.

Hymn IV--Blue Madonna

This picture, my totem,
my touchstone
a Blue Madonna
pensive, serene,
surely before the crucifixion.
My holy child, at forty-five
baptized this Good Friday.
Mama Mary and I wait
for a takeover
of hope in the world.
Away with flashy facades
and the low despots
that hold and wield
the power of destruction.
I wait for a celebration
of the heart.
The Great Mother and I
hold close
all the world's holy children.

Hymn III

The cosmos sings with a violet hum.
Pulsars and moonbeams blend
to gravitational waves, end to end.
Do you sense it, that thrum?
The cosmos rings with a violet hum.

Chanting OHM may help us mend
if before our Divines we kneel, and bend.
It is a plumb line, a rhumb.
The cosmos speaks with a violet hum.

Truth, love ,and friendship all depend
upon us to protect and defend.
So shake your bells, sound your drum.
The cosmos rings with a violet hum.

Hymn II

Blue jay came by today
singing her song
about La Dolce Vita
the sweet, simple life.
I joined her chorus
with my off key voice.
As morning stretched to noon
in this broken world
we spun magic
at the edges.
We chased away
all the shadows.

Hymn

Beltane follows close on the heels
of Easter and Passover this year
leading us to the Summer Solstice,
preceded by April's full pink moon.
All through these high holy times
and cross-quarter days
through winter, spring, summer, autumn
I have heard a grim hymn.
It is the banshees keening
for our sanctuary cities disappearing,
dark whispers that our democracy is dead.
Yet still, in this abyss
there is breath, beauty, and light.
And petals falling, falling
from the redbud trees.

Mysteries of the Night

The embers in the grate fade
to a glimmer.
I pray to be dreamed
by something larger than myself.
Kali-Ma arrives,
wild. ferocious, dipped in blood.
In this moment,
I sing to the Beloved,
to the mysteries of the night.
Ma, make me strong.
Ma, make me fearless.
Ma, keep me free,
Ma, may I not faint from sorrow.
I keep the Mary light burning.
