How to Read the Tarot

Begin by brewing a cup of tea,
a nervine, lemon balm or chamomile,
this is after all, your future.
A reading at the dark of the moon is best,
before the night creatures crawl
and bad humours fill the air.
Pick a circular deck, with a fairy-tale motif,
and no reversals.
Hold a question in your heart,
shuffle the cards and place them on the table.
Choose only two.
Like the ancient Israelites,
these are your seer stones, Urim and Thumimm,
black and white, yes or no.
Isn't that all you were asking?

Strange Loops

On a rainy day
I cannot see
the sun or stars
though they are there
in Grandmother Spider's web.
I am enmeshed
in this dance of creation
of strange spiral loops
with no end, no beginning.
I am witness
to this tidy prison.
But there is freedom
and there is love.

White Pumpkins

A dumb supper
for Samhain, my birthday.
Black tablecloths, white pumpkins
a river of sorrows
in my kitchen.
I invite my friends
that passed this year.
In the silence
I may hear then whisper,
"We are not gone,
just away."
"It is not cruel to say,
we will meet again,
as dust on white pumpkins."

Happy Birthday writing.com

Writing.com called me
and I answered
with story and poem,
heartache and bliss,
thunder and memory,
and leaping nano particles.
Happy Birthday to all the beings here.
My arms cradle you,
my breath whispers
prayers of grace to you.
That is how we roll
in writing.com world.

taking up space on the mothership

I love my face in the morning
no teeth, bed head, the day dawning.
Just a baby-faced naked clown,
I refuse to put myself down.
Crow's feet, double chin, smile and frown lines I embrace.
You just see an old, old woman, I love my face.

I love my body at nighttime,
uncoiled tension, full recline.
What dreams may come I do not know.
Ghosts, phantasms, nightmares come , go..
I am an ecotone, a swamp witch, swamp molly.
Flaccid arms, flabby belly, I love my body.

As the day unfolds....

as the day I unfolds
I learn
that Kamala likes to cook
democracy is sweet
and I will bake an election cake
tradition says it is dense, yeasty, boozy
but I am going for easy
Duncan Hines spice
with extra spice for diversity
extra raisins for pleasure
as the day unwinds
I place candles on the cake
lighting a way for victory
and to keep democracy sweet

New Beginnings

I am not a spring chicken
but an old stewing hen.
Old hens make good soup,
Jewish penicillin.
JD Vance, shillbilly, thinks my use
is only helping raise children.
I'll take that
and raise it a million.
The millions of zest
from post-menopausal women
working to crush patriarchy
and JD Vance.

Womyn

We
began as an egg
carried in a dark warm womb
all our grandmothers singing stories
to all the eggs we carry within from birth
trembling prophets, whispered prayers
along life's zigzag road
moon mind dreams
all connected
by ancient
threads

Author's note: Concrete poem----supposed to be egg shaped. Couldn't figure how to do that.

Dandelions

I fashioned a garland
of dandelions
placed it on my altar
to the Queen of Heaven.
She prefers weeds to pearls
but sees perfection in both.
In time the flowers will vanish
scattering my prayers with their seeds.
I have named
the turtles in our pond
and the tiny fish they feed on.
Perhaps, it is all prayer.

Dance

Emma Goldman said
she wouldn't join a revolution
if she couldn't dance.
I am done with revolutions
and the heavy lifting.
I want to dance with mountains
gambol with rivers
frolic with trees.
Not an Elaine of Seinfeld dance
but one into the void.
A curling of spine
a vast gasp of breath.
Anyway, there is nothing to do now.
so, let's begin.

I refuse to say
amerikka is beautiful, or magical.
The plains and purple mountains weep.
The cradle of democracy
rocks no more
splintered by amoral judges
and felonious politicians.
This once glorious and holy land
besmirched by greed.

Happy 4th of July
burns to ash
on my tongue.
there is no magic
to be found here.
