I overhauled an item in my porfolio: For at least the 10th time. I reread it last night and realized the meter was still off. Not sure why this one has given me so much trouble. Still not perfect, but it flows a lot better now. I'm finally happy with it. This is your sign to go back and rework your old writings with fresh eyes. Be ruthless. I know it's your favorite line and it's so clever, but if it doesn't work with the rest of the piece or doesn't flow right, then cut or rephrase it. Keep an old version if you think you might want to go back to it someday. Maybe you can work it into a different piece, or start a new one. No one writes a best-selling novel or world famous poem in one take. You'll be surprised what you can end up with if you continuously improve on the same work over time. |
The rumors are true. No, not that one. ... Not that one either. There is a new prompt at:
Song Prompt: "Simbiose" ![]() Lyric Prompt: "Walking in Memphis" ![]() Both are due at the end of the month. |
A blast from the past: "Wanted" ![]() Lost: one hour, last seen Sunday, at the corner of Daylight and Savings street. If found, please fall back and call the time police. End this temporal malady. Reward: $50 thousand Or an extra hour of sleep. |
It's bound to turn up again sooner or later—they always do. Give it a few months, say six or so, then contact the police with a description. |
Happy March, all! I am flying out tomorrow to Memphis, TN for a job interview at a great institution. This would definitely be a dream job. New lyric prompt for February: "All Things End" ![]() The prizes for January have all been sent out, and the January prompts are now closed. Second prompt for February will go up in a couple of weeks! |
Well. January was a tough year, but we made it. Sorry I haven't been around. My last day at work was yesterday, after 6 years. The end of an era, and one of the hardest weeks I can remember, mentally, emotionally and physically. I need some time to get my life back in order, whatever it's going to be. Please be patient as I get caught up here. I do plan to send out prizes and a new prompt for "The One-Line Lyric Challenge" ![]() At some point, when my brain solidifies again, I will also try and catch up in "The Bradbury" ![]() |
Today, I am reminded of these immortal words from Martin Luther King Jr: "Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that." Good news you probably don't care about: I've officially "graduated" from physical therapy! Still not at 100%, but I can do most things now. Good news you might actually care about: You still have time to enter "The One-Line Lyric Challenge" ![]()
Lyric Prompt: "All She Wants To Do Is Dance" ![]() Song Prompt: "Motherland" ![]() Time Remaining: [Refresh to load countdown.] |
Congratulations to all the Quill nominees! Unfortunately, I didn't get any nominations this year. Probably because I didn't write anything in 2024, besides a couple of eight-line poems ![]() I'm not going to let that happen in 2025. After this month, my last month at my job of 6 years, I'll have a lot more time. Mental health allowing, I will be using some of it to write. But until then, I will probably be MIA. By the way, a new prompt is up over at:
Song prompt: "Motherland" ![]() Lyric prompt: "All She Wants To Do Is Dance" ![]() Keep in mind, there's no rule against cross-submitting your entry to other contests or activities. Perhaps, "The Bradbury" ![]() |
You're as bad as me, Anni. Nothing but blank pages and I couldn't convince anyone that it was a "shape poem" about snow. ![]() ![]() |
But you run a contest! That's something. ![]() ![]() |

Thank you for all the anniversary notes and reviews! I can honestly say I probably wouldn't have written a single thing for fun in the last 4 years if I hadn't joined this site at the beginning of 2021. I definitely needed a push to get back into it. I did fall off again last year. I could give lots of excuses, but I won't. I'll just try and do better this year. Let's not forget about:
Lyric Prompt: "All She Wants To Do Is Dance" ![]() If you're on "The Bradbury" ![]() Song prompt for January coming soon. |
