Santeven Quokklaus Author Icon - its a mixed genre a bit almost everything as it a long story but written in muiple books some of my characters are kids and some adults not all living the same lifesyle i a bit of mystery tie into supernatual
I don’t think the length of a book is the only factor or chapter count. There is no right answer. I have gone back in both novels and stories and cut down the character count several times. People can only keep track of so much, major as well minor characters. Scan through some established works similiar to what you are writing and get a sense of what might be a range.

I think too many characters is a common problem that frustrates readers. There is a rule that says people can only keep track of five things at once as a generalization. That number falls right in the middle of the range given by Santeven Quokklaus Author IconMail Icon, which sounds like a reasonable range.

Can't answer the question in terms of chapters.

In terms of the target audience...

If the character matters, it matters. The obstacle is usually character development... How to make the character shine.

It's easier to develop one character than it is to develop several. The story is better when characters may interact with each other. The story will appeal to the widest spectrum of demographics when there are numerous significant characters.
