Read an excerpt from my novel "Golden Strings" here. This work is a literary odyssey, about a gifted young musician (singer-songwriter, with the acoustic guitar) named Gary Sapling, It takes place in California, in the heady summer of 1974. Gary is an eighteen-year-old who works a menial job at the Music department of his small-town mall. His life changes most dramatically, when he gets an offer to spend a short time visiting his divorced uncle Karl, who lives in a remote part of the state. As they re-establish their bond, Gary suggests that the pair of them visit the legendary San Francisco. Karl agrees, and drives them both down to the city. They check into a hotel there, and Gary soon ventures out on his own. Gary has a chance meeting with a young member of a local guerrilla theatre troupe named the 'frisco Freedom Collective, and she invites him to attend their live show that night. Gary does so, and ends us participating in it (with his guitar). The actors in the Collective spontaneously invite Gary to spend the night with them at their communal apartment. He does so, and find himself quickly bonding with the five members of this troupe. He enters a loose love triangle with two of the female members, and soon afterwards is cast in the lead in a short 'indie' film. The film depicts Gary, his nearly-naked body and guitar both spray-painted gold, emerging god-like from the Pacific Ocean, with the iconic Golden Gate Bridge in the backdrop. As the fateful summer progresses, Gary pursues his musical career, and ends finding true love in a way that he wasn't expecting.
This novel is inspired by "Hair", "Boogie Nights", and "Almost Famous", and the cultural writings and art of the late sixties and early seventies. It's intended for mature, open-minded readers.
