Thoroughly enjoyed this. I'd relate it to Shel Silverstein's work simply because of the playful manner in which it begins and the life-lesson displayed in the final line. A kind-of..ill-wrapped present, instead of ending with a bow on top-it's a realistic metaphorical period or end to the story.
