Sounds like a great start to a children's adventure book! I really hope you've considered writing the adventure part! ;D

And I think you have hit the nail on the head! The ending is unhappy because of what the children have learned. Truthfully, I think you took what was there and some subtext, put it together and learned the lesson of the book. This is a great review and some awesome essay writing!!
