I really really enjoyed the premise of this story. And the phrase "the jar his mother had given him" is so poignant.

The end feels a little rushed, and I would have enjoyed more details of what happened when the jars broke and how they broke.

What do you think of the idea of writing this in the first person?

This is rally well written and compelling. Your writing style, especially at the beginning, reminds me a bit of Stephen King - which I mean as the highest compliment.

I can see the being fleshed out into a longer story easily - and hope it is because I'd love to read it.
