This was fantastic. I loved that we saw the whole story through Ruby's eyes as she talked about knitting and her colorblindness and her family. I found myself wanting to know more of her story. She had a wise air about her that I really liked. I also liked the details you provided---such as the flag having grey and how that changed after Evan left to fight and the pies themselves. On the other hand, I loved the details you left out due to Rubie's particular issue with colors. It was easy to figure out she was dealing with aliens---especially with the pictures revealing them to have flippers, but we didn't have to have wild and crazy description to convey that. It really made the ending that more impactful for me. When we realize that she is the grandma that stopped the invasion and that her family instantly judge the aliens because they have green skin it makes us have to reexamine how we view others on appearance and skin color. I found it to be subtle. I never once felt that I was being preached at nor talked down to about this issue, and I liked that. It was such a great piece and thank you so much for sharing it.
