I'm the lead editor for a small independent press, but I am on maternity leave for the next several years and thus not accepting submissions. I'll tell you my professional opinion on first chapters or short pieces and whether I would have accepted it or rejected it if I was looking for work. I've dealt most with controversial speculative fiction, and I'm most interested in polyamory a.k.a consensual non-monogamy.

This was a very interesting piece. It leaves a lot of questions for the reader, too.

Happy writing, and I hope you enjoy it here!

These are some very difficult emotions to face, and you covered a lot of ground in just a few sentences.

Welcome! I stumbled upon your work through the “read a newbie” feature.

This is a great start! I love the intense feelings expressed here.

Formatting tip: when writing on the internet, add a blank line between paragraphs. It's standard practice and easier on the eyes. Indentation is used in books for economy of paper, but since paper is not an issue on the internet, we use an extra line.

Happy writing, and I hope you enjoy it here!

Welcome! I stumbled upon your work through the “read a newbie” feature.

This is a great start! I see a few minor grammar errors, but nothing too bad. Keep up the good work, and I'm sure you will weave a magnificent tale.

Formatting tip: please start a new paragraph every time the speaker changes in dialogue. This is standard practice in fiction and helps make the piece easier to read.

Happy writing, and I hope you enjoy it here!

I can see this introduction appealing to a certain audience, though personally, it's not landing on me. "Or was it the other way around?" merely confuses me. Did he become the wife of the shapely woman? Was the Mendocino coast captivated by him?

This appears to be a current issue in today's society.

The grammar could use work. If you want a more in-depth look at sentence structures, I recommend reading "The Elements of Grammar" by Margaret Shertzer.

This was very gut-wrenching. The emotions here really packed a punch. The grape jelly thing made it seem to me that the aversion was all in Geppetto's head, a mental illness. I have a son, and his favorite foods and toys change all the time. He is growing and thus craves novelty. Change is the very nature of life. It felt like Geppetto got stuck on the idea of his son in a particular form and didn't have time to accept the drastic changes, so that one little detail pushed him over the edge.

I'm using my computer to listen to this, and the computer pronounces "Benoit" like "Ben Wa" and I can't help but think of Ben Wa balls.

The meaning comes through clearly, but the grammar could use work. If you want a more in-depth look at sentence structures, I recommend reading "The Elements of Grammar" by Margaret Shertzer.

Human emotions are as complicated as the evolutionary path that made our species what it is today. For the record, I don't think it was a mistake. Many of us wouldn't be here without spur-of-the-moment breeding. Some cultures accommodate that feature of our evolutionary heritage, and more materialistic ones don't.

Welcome! I stumbled upon your work through the “read a newbie” feature.

This is very beautiful. "Dandelion Wine" by Ray Bradbury was like that for me for a long time. I have a rule that a book I'm forced to read in school cannot be my favorite book. I heard that other people read it in school, and I'm thankful that my teachers never assigned it to me.

Review of Purpose

Welcome! I stumbled upon your work through the “read a newbie” feature.

I find it strange and sad that many people are troubled by these questions, yet I also understand the most likely reason why. Many parents don't express unconditional love for their children, and children wind up thinking that they have to make a lot of money or earn fame or something like that to make their parents proud. Parents should be proud of their children from the moment they take their first breath. Being alive is an accomplishment in and of itself.

Welcome! I stumbled upon your work through the “read a newbie” feature.

I gave up the idea of "the one" in 2009 when I decided that I had to move on from my fist love while still keeping room for him in my life if he ever returned. That's what got me into polyamory, and it's the best decision I ever made.
