I'm the lead editor for a small independent press, but I am on maternity leave for the next several years and thus not accepting submissions. I'll tell you my professional opinion on first chapters or short pieces and whether I would have accepted it or rejected it if I was looking for work. I've dealt most with controversial speculative fiction, and I'm most interested in polyamory a.k.a consensual non-monogamy.

Try avoiding forms of the verb “to be” such as am, are, is, was, were, etc. This is known as passive language. Using more colorful verbs can greatly strengthen your writing.

At first glance, it looks like there's a typo s on the end of "never." However, you could say that s was an intentional, artistic choice. The s represents a smile that doesn't make sense. It's there even when it's not appropriate to the situation.

I feel this so much right now. I recently remembered how my first love told me to stop shouting about 15 years ago. Shortly before I met him, I was working at a scout camp where I had to shout all day long. Before I worked at the scout camp, my parents wanted me to be quiet at home. Now, my husband is telling me to talk louder, and my parents are telling my son to be quieter when he visits. I only tell him to be quieter when we visit the library. I love hearing his loud voice.

That's a rather sadistic method of target practice. Why shoot the deer at all if the intent is not to kill? A bandage and some antiseptic won't take away the pain, and now the deer is easy pickings for predators. Is that the point? To feed the wolves?

I'm sorry to hear you're going through this. There is still some hope, though. Some people benefit greatly from talking to a psychiatrist or a counselor. I went through a rough patch with my husband and had difficulty convincing him to talk to someone. I had to sign up for therapy on my own first, and he followed suit a month later. While I was signing up for therapy, the intake person recommended a book called "The Mastery of Love" by don Miguel Ruiz. I think the world would be a better place if everyone read that book.

Still, it sounds like you have a difficult road ahead. One of my friends convinced her partner to sign up for therapy, but he refused to listen to the therapist's advice. Of course, there are two sides to every story, and I heard a different version of the story from him with no mention of therapy. They broke up years ago, though I only heard her side of the story two months ago.

Also, find out if your spouse has any ongoing health issues that could be contributing to mental distress. Some people may find aspects of their physical health embarrassing and take our their irritability on others rather than talking to a doctor. Unfortunately, some doctors will ignore their patients and leave those issues unresolved. My husband finally found out that he's lactose intolerant. Three years ago, he reached out to a doctor, and the doctor ignored his complaints. Aside from the issue going unresolved, getting ignored by a doctor can be a huge blow to one's mental health. Sometimes, you need to switch doctors and report the old one.
