I'm the lead editor for a small independent press, but I am on maternity leave for the next several years and thus not accepting submissions. I'll tell you my professional opinion on first chapters or short pieces and whether I would have accepted it or rejected it if I was looking for work. I've dealt most with controversial speculative fiction, and I'm most interested in polyamory a.k.a consensual non-monogamy.

Welcome! I stumbled upon your work through the “read a newbie” feature.

Thanks for sharing these deeply personal thoughts. Writing about these things is a great way to process your feelings and let others who have had similar experiences know they are not alone.

I recommend getting a program that reads aloud to you for proofreading purposes. I use Natural Reader since I bought it many years ago, but these days, you can get tts programs for free or simply access them from your browser. Here is a nice, free one: https://ttsreader.com/

Review of A Tale of Two

Welcome! I stumbled upon your work through the “read a newbie” feature.

My first love from 2007 said, “I’d have it no other way,” a lot. I still love him deep down, but we will likely never meet again. He gave me a gift, though. He showed me what's possible and set the standard for everyone else. I didn't fall that hard again until 2015. Then, well, sometimes people are taken away from us far earlier than we expect. My first piece here on writing.com was a grief piece. That taught me to appreciate time with the people who are here in my life now. I got married in 2018, and now we have a beautiful son who is 20 months old.

Happy writing, and I hope you enjoy it here!

This opened well, but the rest was rather difficult to follow. Setting aside your writing for a week or a month before editing can help make it more coherent.

Welcome! I stumbled upon your work through the “read a newbie” feature.

This is quite intriguing.

“It’s” is a contraction for “it is.” If you want to make it possessive, drop the apostrophe. This is the single most common grammar mistake I see among beginning authors, so you’re not alone in this.

Review of How to be evil
Review by K5Rakitan
Rated: E | (4.0)
Welcome! I stumbled upon your work through the “read a newbie” feature.

You've expressed the premise well, though if this is supposed to be the prologue or first chapter and not a synopsis for the back of the book, I recommend jumping into the action to hook the reader. Talking about the characters without showing them interacting with each other is what editors call an infodump.

Try avoiding forms of the verb “to be” such as is, are, was, were, etc. This is known as passive language. Using more colorful verbs can greatly strengthen your writing.

Review of SELF ESTEEM
Review by K5Rakitan
Rated: E | (4.0)
Welcome! I stumbled upon your work through the “read a newbie” feature.

Growing up as humans, it is highly important for our parents to work majorly on our self esteem. When they show us love, we learn to love ourselves. Unfortunately, many children do not get enough love from their parents and must hire therapists to tell them it's OK to love themselves.
