I'm the lead editor for a small independent press, but I am on maternity leave for the next several years and thus not accepting submissions. I'll tell you my professional opinion on first chapters or short pieces and whether I would have accepted it or rejected it if I was looking for work. I've dealt most with controversial speculative fiction, and I'm most interested in polyamory a.k.a consensual non-monogamy.

By 113, I would expect him to have great-grandchildren. 45 is about the latest one can reasonably reproduce, so if he became a parent at 45, then a grandparent at 90, his first (and probably only, since there's a huge decline in fertility after age 45) grandchildren would be 23 years old. It's not clear how old these grandchildren are in the story, but it feels to me like they should be somewhere in the neighborhood of 8-12.

If he first became a parent at 35, then a grandparent at 70, then a great-grandparent at 105, that would make his oldest great-grandchild 8 years old.

If he first became a parent at 30, then a grandparent at 60, then a great-grandparent at 90, his oldest great-grandchild would be 23, and he could have several younger great-grandchildren as well.

I think autumn is my favorite season. The weather is starting to cool down, so I can put more blankets on the bed, but the mornings are still warm and getting out of bed is easy.

The grammar could use work. If you want a more in-depth look at sentence structures, I recommend reading "The Elements of Grammar" by Margaret Shertzer.

Hello! I found this through the random “Read & Review” feature.

This is a beautiful sentiment, though I would argue that being nice actually does cost a certain amount of mental energy. It doesn't cost much, but it definitely costs something. If you've ever been completely exhausted, you'll know there are times when you desperately need to recharge your batteries, and even benign social interactions kick you into fight-or-flight mode, because only an adrenaline rush will give you enough energy to respond in any manner whatsoever. This is why people on their commute home avoid talking to each other. This is why spouses fight. They are already at home and there is nowhere else to fly.

Well, it might be different for extroverts, but I am definitely an introvert.

Formatting tip: please start a new paragraph every time the speaker changes in dialogue. This is standard practice in fiction and helps make the piece easier to read.

This provides a lot of food for thought. I agree with most of this, but seeing what harm comes to people and entire communities without environmental regulations, I can't stand behind a libertarian mindset fully. I wish I didn't have to file paperwork to homeschool my son when he turns 6, but I'm also aware that some people who shouldn't be homeschooling would choose to do so if it was easier to file the paperwork for it. I'm actually not trying to do full homeschooling. I want an independent study plan that will allow my son access to the playgrounds that are within walking distance of our home but always locked up. Filing the paperwork for full homeschooling is a last resort for me.
