This is a very beautiful poem. I think that the imagery of nature compared to the pureness of the love this person has is an excellent metaphor. The purness of the water and the genuine natural beauty of the stream and pebbles leads the reader to see the genuine love and inward beauty of the protagonist. The image of the person who seems ready to wade in the water(pants rolled up) but lacks the courage to do so is something I think most people who have ever loved and lost love could relate to. This is great.
I enjoyed reading this essay. I think that it could actually be two seperate essays. The first part obviously takes the reader into the heart and mind of a performing ice skater (something very much on all of our minds right now considering the Olympics are on!). I think you do a terrific job of really throwing the reader right into the passion, fear and ecstacy of the athlete who must perform to perfection as well as to "grace". I like the way you define and redefine the word "grace" throughout the story. Outwardly it is beauty, but inside it can be composed of many things like a burden or a facade. When the skater does their "last dance" etc I feel the essay could end right there. Then I think that you could turn the rest of the essay into an entire new essay, introducing the concept of Grace but as a parallel to death. That is what struck me, but in any event this essay gets the reader involved and thinking- which is a sign that it is very good! Keep writing!
