I was first published by the National Library of Poetry when I was a very tender 11 years old (and being touted as extremely gifted) - of course, this was in the days before spam, popup ads, and Poetry.com as a household name. I will always hold a spot in my heart for them, though, because they gave me the confidence to forge ahead, keep trying... dig a little bit deeper. I've not yet made it to any kind of poetry convention (and in fact the one convention I have attended, a National Association of Broadcaster's convention ... was so enormous I was terrified but so diverse it was thrilling) but I too dream of pseudo-intellectual conversations with somewhat interesting people over cups of hot java and with pretty inspiring stanzas ringing in my ears... so my own thought? Go for it. It may be worth it, even if all you get out of it is a few more elevator buddies
