I have to say, I am very impressed. Not many men out there, even Christian men - heck, not even very many Christians ever take the time to find out what it's like to love someone like that! Yes, we talk all the time about "loving each other the way Christ loves the church," but how many of us actually stop and think about what that really means? Yes, the most famous and complete way Jesus demonstrated that was through His death for us, but what about everything He did before that? Weren't all the things recorded in the Bible about Christ examples of His love for us? It's very encouraging to see your desire to actually find out what that means as you strive to treat your wife that way.
Your humble approach is also encouraging; you're not self-depricating - you're not looking for pity - but you're honest. I really liked this part: "My selfish thoughts do not scare God and He is probably humored that I am finally listening, knowing I do not realize what I have gotten myself into." Isn't that the truth about everything when it comes to God? I love how you bring a God with a sense of humor into your reality, as I am a firm believer in that concept. (I mean, come on, just look at the platypus! I can imagine God giggling with glee as he watched the 19th century scientist scratch their heads in confusion as they tried to figure that animal out.)
I guess I should give you a bit of a critique as well, just to be fair. You're writing was very straightforward and easy to read, but I had to reread a few different parts to figure out what you were saying. For example: " People of other faiths or who do not believe at all, may look down at me for my initial thoughts of self preservation; thinking, and he calls himself a Christian." I didn't catch at first that the last part of that sentence was meant to be a vocalized opinion of those you reference in the first part of the sentence. Either quotation marks or some other form of denoting the phrase "and he calls himself a Christian" would have made that clear. There were a few other places where that happened as well, but it was nothing that prevented me from understanding it, just made an initial reading of a few sentences confusing.
Anyway, I really liked this; both the idea and the writing. I'm sure your wife will love this, and I commend you for the effort. You'll be in my prayers, brother.
