Please don't tell me that you sit in a rocking chair on a porch and whittle! You're a fantastic storyteller. I had to laugh at your sister's comment. In my family, I was the only one willing to get into a boat with my father ("Memories of Captain Bligh" ). He also taught us kids how to fish. Needless to say, we fished from shore or off docks. No one was willing to even get into a rowboat with that man.
Please don't hate me, but I have one tiny correction for this story also. One "dons" a life jacket. "Dawn" is a noun meaning daybreak.
Hee hee! And there was no commercial interruption. It's always amazing at what a young age that children show their personalities. Very well-written. You have a real knack for capturing the magic of childhood. Just one tiny correction, if you don't mind. In the last sentence, it should be "you're", the contraction of "you are" not "your" which is a possessive.
Nope, I'm not an English teacher. I have nightmares about English class.
This is fabulous and so true! I have one suggestion. I think that the numbers and the following sentence should be in bold so that you have the "rules" followed by the explanations. Otherwise, this is just perfect. I wish I could post a copy in every grocery store. Write on!
I was howling with laughter. This is wonderful. Now that my daughter is grown, this would be a great substitute for "The Night Before Christmas". I bet a little eggnog while reading would enhance the experience. Write on!
Perfect!! I wouldn't change a thing. You've fleshed out the characters perfectly. You've conveyed the mood and emotions without getting maudlin. And that's difficult. This is one of those pieces that ends at the right moment but also leaves the reader wanting to know more, to know what comes next. Write on!
This is a really great story. It's so natural for a colege student to have a roommate and/or a pet. Maybe you could put a little more in about how Chester came to live with her? And why she decided to let him stay? Other than that , this is just perfect! Write on!
Wow! Wow! Wow! Not only is this a fine piece of writing, but it's a real spirit booster for someone who will be in your shoes (age-wise) in a few more years. Thanks for reassuring me that it's not nearly as bad as I think it will be. And your wit is perfect. Write on Not-So-Old-Man!
