Hehheh. I do enjoy cynical rants of any kind (being prone to them myself) as well as correcting people on their word usage (nothing makes people more defensive.)

You could have also mentioned the fact that ignorance is no excuse; even if someone had heard other people use it first it is obvious that the word breaks one of the few sensible rules of the English language.
Irregardless contains two negatives - the prefix 'ir' and the suffix 'less' resulting in a word that is saying 'to not-not regard'.
The two negatives cancel each other out resulting in not a stupid way of saying 'regardless' but a REALLY stupid way of saying 'regard'
Hence you have a stronger argument on your hands than you thought!
