It's easy to get lost in the details or bogged down, especially in larger projects. Your tip on BEEFING () and working from the end is a great way to approach this, so that ultimately I don't wind up just rewriting the whole series over and over.
I enjoyed this read quite a bit! I think that the slow expose of her [powers?] is thrilling despite being mundane. The tension built by her asking the spider to return her wish of luck, and not needing it - then culminates with the final sentences about humanity's frailty, her own desire and the reader's question of what - or who - she might be about to hunt.
The initial suspense revolving around her alleged parental figures draws intrigue from the reader. Are her parents really not who they say? Are they inhuman impostors? Is that simply how she feels or reality? Furthermore, are her powers limited to animal control or is she more powerful than she seems?
I'd be interested to read more of this story and see where it takes her and the other characters introduced so far, including the spider.
One final note: In most spider species, the female is the larger of the two. That is not to say it is a hard rule, or that this was not simply a very large male spider, just food for thought!
