The main question here is, "...why do we do that if the purpose is to encourage each other?" I think there could be a number of reasons some of which are:
***In depth critiques take time and time is money in any business, even in the business of writing.
***Becoming a "good writer" takes time and effort and constant honing of the skill. It's a process.
***Some people write to express their ideas or to have an outlet for their imagination. Their purpose is not publication.
***Sometimes, you can see the piece was written by someone emotionally injured or a teen searching for the meaning of their life, which is part of the growing process. Writing is their outlet. A place to arrange their thoughts.
There are many reasons why we come across these items and leave. Unfortunately we're not mind readers so, unless something is obvious in the piece the best we can do is to encourage the person to keep reading and writing and seek help from every and all avenues, not just writing.com.
I think your poll just helped me figure out a response for myself. Next time I come across a piece that needs a lot of work, I'll encourage them to read other writers in the same genre and improve their spelling and grammar.
I think we're mentoring, and teaching to some degree and learning from one another. We examine a "piece of work" not the person behind it.
