Review of The Sound  Open in new Window.
Review by macbeth Author IconMail Icon
Rated: 13+ | (4.0)
An invisible mosquito might have been as annoying, a bee more menacing but when a sound has your attention and you are living in the moment the stream of consciousness is a spiral with all the force of gravity. Slapstick funny and the readers are but rubberneckers driving down the expressway in stop and go traffic wanting to see the carnage up ahead.
Ultimately a mystery.the girl, the sound.
The caricatures though are spot on.

Review of The Fun House  Open in new Window.
Review by macbeth Author IconMail Icon
Rated: 13+ | (3.5)
I am thinking that everyone knows a haunted house but most would not want to tell the story though that doesn't stop them from listening to those brave enough to tell their own. Some of us have the storytelling gene while others have the listening gene. Sadly with all the children that go missing it is the grain of truth within the tale that makes us wonder and in projecting our own fears we can be made to imagine the worst.
An exploration of a child's simple logic when presented with a mystery.
Refreshingly without the conventional gore.

I thought my life was hard because I had no shoes, until I met a man who had no feet. All things being relative the people of Japan probably thought the first detonation of a nuclear device on a civilian population was a terrible thing. The world's first detonation of a thermonuclear device in the center of a major civilian population will probably be a terrible thing. You always remember the first times, there may not be anyone around to remember the end times.

Review of Admonitions  Open in new Window.
Review by macbeth Author IconMail Icon
Rated: E | (4.0)
A leap of faith still requires an act of will. When an act of will requires a leap of faith the powers that be the status quo find it to their advantage for the future to be a singularity that they cannot see beyond.
The human race is doomed, we are but here to witness its end. Though I am forever the optimist there are no absolutes but one, everything dies.

It is a unique and exquisite torture when you cannot go from a place you cannot stay and the only choice is between two evils all the while knowing the law of unexpected consequence is unforgiving.

Review of Day 11: Peru  Open in new Window.
Review by macbeth Author IconMail Icon
Rated: E | (4.0)
The journey into the future has a forward spiral motion painted with broad strokes and colored with the overwhelming sense of impending doom, all with special delivery. To be born in the year of the dragon, to live in the age of the dragon allows for many possibilities and of course interesting times.

It is difficult to imagine nothing. Even cold and dark silence is something in three dimensions but if you add the fourth dimension; time, one's only salvation would be to have no memory of it. Otherwise madness would follow, and that would at least be something else. But I agree one must first have sentience for there to be something, and that it would be best for the sentience to be awake.

It is not something to tell, it is not something to be told, It is something one must come to know if one's to grow and not just grow old. At once forever and never at the entrance to the labyrinth one discovers what tangled webs we weave and that we are all but actors on the stage.

The thing about love is, you can't make someone love you, they must do that on their own, in their own time. All you can do is love them, regardless. But remember the song says "Love is a drug" and once you start down that slippery slope you build up a tolerance that always requires more. It grows to feed, it feeds to grow, it needs to feed, the habit.

There comes a moment when one is standing on the edge of the event horizon when one must decide anew, whether to stay or to take a leap of faith into a singularity that one cannot see beyond. It is a daunting decision made more difficult when the siren song calls to all your unfilled longing. Just as you realize that there are no absolutes but one, everything dies.

spartan of detail though both agenda and strategy are clear.

Review of Silence  Open in new Window.
Review by macbeth Author IconMail Icon
Rated: ASR | (4.0)
This reminds me of a movie on television that describes what would happen to the world if man were no longer here; except in the movie there was no mourning for our passing and the scene was projected much further into the future. Though in contrast the message there was that the planet would survive nicely without the hairless, walking, talking monkeys. After reading this it makes one wonder in the shadow of impending doom, why we (in the collective sense) are here.

A song sings in the background, "a hesitant prizewriter trapped within his truth like a hesitant prizefighter trapped within his youth. The very young do not always believe what they are told, but then again, neither do the very old."The semantics of a discussion wondering about the underlying question; Is God a figment of our collective or individual imaginations or perhaps inversely are we but a figment of God's, leaving one to ask as we row, "Is life really but a dream?" Unfortunately once the rats discover they are actually in a maze the experiment has no further purpose.
Linear within normal parameters.

Review of Panarchy  Open in new Window.
Review by macbeth Author IconMail Icon
Rated: E | (4.0)
When the physical laws personified take a holiday much like a trip with Alice into Wonderland through the looking glass, things tend to take gravity much less seriously than imagined. But it is in that imagi nation that all manner of things can take a run for the border line separating genius and madness.
Inspiring.

Review of I Wonder  Open in new Window.
Review by macbeth Author IconMail Icon
Rated: 13+ | (4.0)
You cannot make someone love you, just as you cannot make them love themselves, they have to both or either on their own. Guilt's regret makes us wonder if our actions are the cause of an effect that will affect us until we can answer the question we ask ourselves.

Someone with, the courage to change the things that can be changed, the serenity to accept the things that can't and the wisdom to know the difference between the two. While looking for diversions to keep the boredom at bay a bad girl's portfolio is certainly the way. More mischief than malice, a dragon's fire can temper your steel so that it when quenched properly might be a little, more resilient than brittle.

The first and last forever is the worst, goodbye can be such a lonely word, or hollow. When the seas are boiled by the sun there will be no one to see the end, or write of brimstone and molten rock. Best to record the day's anticipation so that those who listen might appreciate the "now" that they are given.

Review of Crazy  Open in new Window.
Review by macbeth Author IconMail Icon
Rated: ASR | (4.0)
While crazy is as crazy does, I've often wondered what crazy was. A negative feedback loop give you silence, a positive feedback loop gives you noise. The angle of spiral depends on your glide ratio and determines along with the actual drag coefficient whether your flight is lazy or crazy. While the thinking is "the higher your are, the harder you fall", a good height gives you time for reflection, in the event that you want to land safely.
catch 22, a circular distraction.

There are imperatives that drive us on like coming to the surface from deep water, where sunshine is a myth, when you remember why you were waiting to exhale upon the inrush of fresh air into your lungs. It is as much the memory of sunlight as the actual sun upon your face that understands the actions we are forced to take, for heaven's sake.

Horror is as horror does, especially if you were wondering, what horror was. A place where you would least expect evil to sit in a comfortable chair and offer tea and cookies as way of invitation to captivity's loss of freedom and anticipation's loss of dignity.

Review of Superstitious  Open in new Window.
Review by macbeth Author IconMail Icon

Just because you're a paranoid doesn't mean the world's not out to get you, apparently, especially if the signs you see are interpreted as deliberate. As the human eye as evolved to detect motion its brain has been evolving to affect emotion. Attempting to make sense of entropy's nonsense can be trying.

You have to learn to argue properly, for certainly it is a skill like any other that requires honeing. For once skilled and practiced there are many tangled webs to weave in this game of fly and spider. For those that carry no mental shields of armour for defense the conflict can be disturbing at least until one is acquainted with the rules. Words can be as effective as stones when thrown at a receptive target.

I have a greater affinity for the harmonica and saxophone but music is regardless, the sound of words converted by the magic of talent and practice to a harmony of a sequence of notes.

When you have been looking for love in all the wrong places it is at once a relief and a frustrating annoyance to realize it has been following you around within your line of sight, within arms reach. A coming of age story in the vein of "If you could read my mind love, what a tale my thoughts could tell".
