third hophop practice session
(Verse 1 is at the very start of the song, after music, if there is any, but before the chorus is ever sung)

Verse 1:
Why was I so depressed, about leaving school and flunking some tests?
I was sinning, I had turned from God,
I was fighting the BAD fight-- and not winning...
It felt like a punch in the kidney
Or a low blow, when I realized I was sitting
In a room every night, pretending
To be a block of words in a text-described city.
The fear was blinding, the plot was thickening--
Like chicken broth, vegetarian but NO protein,
Sickly, anemic and floating, through the world without hoping
For anything better, not-even-a-new-sweater
I haven't bought clothes-for-the-better...
Part of a decade, and back then it was the Kool-aid.
Man! How could I be so aimless and vague?
Play some lame games... and get some frags...
Take the drug of the mind. And get flabby legs?
Get fat and lazy. Get pale and pasty?
What a waste, see? I wasn't crazy--
I was just some kid who'd given up on dreaming.
Jaded-before-my-time, by the thought-of-leaving
My comfort zone, but that's gone,
My home is where the heart is, but if you ignore your heart you'll get thrown...
On the street, with no soul food, sore feet, Nothing but your belief...
In the self-righteousness of hopelessness--
Lacking hope in the midst of opportunity's treasure chest
Lacking faith in the face of blinding bliss
Lacking love in the face of those you're gonna miss.
Let's just say this...

Chorus:
This iiiis what I truly feel
It's noooot what I think -- it's what is real.
It's what at last remains.
When the reign of God comes and-douses-the-flames.
Of those who burn the one-thing they need-the-most...
The father, the son, and the holy ghost.

Verse 2:
You always hear about some guy, with a leather jacket and MEAN look in his eye
Riding his bike off to Montana on the fly
On the seat of his pants, screaming at the sky?!
His fight's with God, and you just shake your head,
Cuz you know it's pointless... he'll just hurt his head, beating it into a BRICK wall
Trying to beat he who beats us all
From time to time, whether with a belt... Or beating the air in the Bible Belt
Until a hurricane comes and beats up the sky?
Or a tornado tearing up the land and lives alike
Like snuffing a candle, or flipping a light...
