She finds him in a dream. Is he real or is he truly a dream?
Chapter Six

She walked into the door that evening feeling a little lighter and a lot less stressed. She smiled when she heard the quiet of the house. She found her youngest daughter sitting in the living room with her walkman and her schoolbooks balanced on her lap as she did her homework. She found her oldest sitting at the kitchen table eating a sandwich.

“I would like to talk to you in the living room. I have some good news.” She told her daughter and turned to walk away.

She sat down on the couch across from her daughter and motioned for her to take off her headphones. She waited for her oldest to flop down onto the couch beside her sister. She noticed the disgusted looks and didn’t care. She knew they were angry and wished she could change that.

“I will be starting to work from home come next Friday. I will have more time with the both of you and I will get a pay increase and more vacation time.” She explained what would happen and how she would have more time for them.

“We will actually be able to do things? You won’t have to work all the time?” Her youngest sounded a little hopeful.

“Yes.” She tried to keep the hope out of her voice. She didn’t want to be disappointed with them. She didn’t want to push for something she had pushed away because of her job. She didn’t want to hope for anything other than distrust or disbelief.

“Yeah, right. You never have time for anything.” Her oldest said and stormed off.

“I am going to try and I’m hoping this new position will change that for us.” She called after her. But all she got in response was the slamming of the door.

“We’ll see.” Her youngest smiled sadly and took her things up to her room and closed the door quietly.

She passed the evening without a sign of her daughters; she decided to take a nice hot bubble bath and then climbed into bed with a book and the television remote. She read for a while and started to fall asleep. She felt as though she could sleep forever. She knew she could relax finally.

She could looked down at her clothing to see she was wearing simply a pair of blue jeans and a faded pink tank top and she was wearing a pair of cowboy boots and a faded blue jean jacket. She looked around her, seeing the grass and the wild flowers growing at her feet. There was a forest edging the field where she was standing. She could smell the lavender more than any others. She turned to find a black horse standing near by saddled and ready to ride. She smiled and walked towards the horse to have it nudge her when she grew close enough. She laughed and scratched the horse’s ears and nose.

“You are beautiful, aren’t you boy?” She spoke softly and sweetly to the horse.

She took the reins into her hand and climbed up into the saddle. She was surprised when the horse stood completely still for her. She slipped her feet into the stirrups and the horse moved into a slow walk. She had the odd sense she had ridden before and knew that she had never before been in a saddle.

She urged the horse into a faster pace and laughed as the wind whipped through her hair as she covered the field. The pounding of hooves matched the thrum of her blood through her veins and the beating of her heart. She felt so free, so alive. She didn’t know where she had come up with the knowledge to ride and she didn’t care.

She reached a small creek and slowed the horse to a slow walk. She slid out of the saddle and walked the horse for a few minutes and then let the horse drink the cool, fresh water. She sat down on a boulder near the edge of the stream and looked out over the fields before her. She looked up to see an eagle soar through the cloudless sky. She listened as she heard its cry as it found its dinner.

“May we join you?” The familiar voice pulled her attention from the hungry eagle.

“Of course. I was hoping you would come.” She didn’t have to turn. She knew he would be wearing a mask, just as she knew she was wearing one as well. But she stood and turned anyway to see him wearing a pair of blue jeans as well. She watched as the muscles in his thighs flexed with each movement he made towards her. He wore a white cotton shirt open to the waist and a faded blue jean jacket as well. She noticed he was also wearing a pair of worn black cowboy boots.

She couldn’t tear her eyes away as a lock of hair fell across his forehead and fell down to cover the corner of his mask. She could see his eyes and her heart skipped a beat with at the intensity she saw there. She watched as he walked towards her, a man and in total control, total power.

“I wouldn’t miss being with you for anything in the world.” He whispered huskily.

No words were needed between them. He stopped before her and looked down at her as she found it impossible to tear her gaze away from his torso. She felt his fingertips beneath her chin, lifting to face him. She could see the desire and warmth in his eyes, creating a fire within her she couldn’t control. Her lips parted as his brushed against hers. Leaning into him, silently begging for more. She felt the heat of his hand as he touched the back of her neck beneath her hair, holding her close.

She brought her hand up to his shoulder and held on. She felt his tongue against hers and groaned into his moist, hot mouth. She felt the heaviness fill her and felt a need to have him inside of her. She could barely breathe when he moved to kiss her exposed neck and chest. She gasped when he reached the edge of her tank top and the top of her breasts.

He pulled her into his arms and held her close. When their breathing slowed to a normal pace. He whispered in her ear. “Let’s have a picnic.” He pulled away from her and held out his hand, he waited.

She smiled up at him and took his hand. He led her to their horses and helped her up into her saddle. She followed him to where he had set out the picnic just inside the forest. He tied his horse to a nearby tree and walked over to her. He put his hands at her waist and lifted her from the saddle. She wrapped her arms around his neck as he held her close against his body and let her slide down the length of him. She could feel the evidence of his desire for her against her belly when she touched the ground.

His eyes burned her, creating a need for more. She slid her hand down his chest to feel his heartbeat beneath her palm. He sighed in resignation and took her hands in his and led her to the blanket he had laid out in the small clearing. “Let’s see what’s in this basket.”

She sat down beside him and waited for him to open the basket. She watched as he set out wine glasses, a bottle of wine, a loaf of homemade bread, cheese, chicken, grapes and plates. She held the glasses as he poured the wine.

Setting the bottle of wine back inside the basket, he took a sip and then looked at her. “Tell me what has happened that has been able to relax you and relieve a little of the tension I felt the last time we were together.”

“I am now working from home. It’s going to give me more time with my children and more money. I will be able to basically set my own hours.” She couldn’t keep the smile from her face or her heart when she told him.

“Tell me about your children.” He lay down on his side and rested his head on his hand.

He listened intently as she told him about her two daughters. She told him of the fights and the problems with taking care of two teenage daughters. She told him about the joys and the heartache that went with raising children. She told him of her frustrations and her worries.

“They sound like typical teenagers. Give them time. One day they will come to you and tell you that they are dealing with the same problems with their own daughters or children. One day you will have a relationship with them that most mothers and daughters will envy.” He smiled and reassured her.

In the distance they could hear the sound of the alarm clock and knew she wanted nothing more than to stay where she was with him forever. “I don’t want to leave.” She whispered sadly.

“One day, there will be no leaving.” He reached out and touched her cheek with his fingertips. “I promise you that.”

She woke slowly and with a smile on her face and the promise in her heart that someday she would never have to leave her heart again.
