memories of ( Ruth Jane ) my mother's good humor and motherhood |
I Remember Mama Early Years Mother educated my sister and I in many ways as we grew. She read to us and made sure we had drawing materials, modeling clay, and developmental toys. We traveled with our grand parents through a pair of stereo slide viewers, and an extensive set of travel slides. In our early childhood we had a lead soldier casting set, chemistry sets, a wood burning iron, microscope, erector set, bake oven, and play money. Today my parents would be arrested for child neglect, although we were never harmed by any of our so-called dangerous toys. However, we did have swimming lessons so we wouldn't drown. Times were not right for paragliding, skydiving, skate boarding, or other really dangerous things kids do today. Mother made our house the focal point of family gatherings and holiday meals. We were well acquainted with cousins, aunts and uncles. She cured our hurts and fevers well into my middle age. I recuperated at home from a broken hip when I was 35 years old. During school years we were prodded into learning our multiplication tables ( my sister and I tended to be lazy ) and memorization. Mother fought the school principle to allow us time away from studies to travel with the family on Christmas holidays. No Phonies Allowed Mother was honest and would tell anyone her true thoughts. She was never stuffy or formal and believed she was the equal of anyone. She loved to wise crack. Some of her sayings are on my lips everyday. Friends and family counted on her to bring fun to the occasion. |
