The Boston Tea Party was one of a few important events that led to the American revolution and the birth of our nation. Sam Adams was the leader of this movement of resistance against the British that took place on December 16, 1773. This year marks the 233rd year since this remarkable event. Sam Adams was a genius. He was the mastermind behind the Boston Tea Party. He attended college at Harvard . He inherited the family brewery from his father. Eventually losing his business, he was much better when it came to politics. Sam Adams publically spoke out expressing his opposition of the British Parliament and the tariff laws imposed on the colonies . When the Tea Act was passed in 1773, it gave a tea monopoly to the British East India Company. The British had cornered the tea market by allowing East India to ship tea directly to the colonies without paying taxes. This would put the colonists out of business. During the Colonial years, Tea was widely drank . The trade was very important. The way we view Tea is different today than back then. There are more beverage choices today. They didnt have Coca-Cola soft drinks back then. The world drank alot of tea back in the 1700's . Potentially , The colonists would lose dearly in the tea trade as a result of the tea act and the business ethics of the British. But our hero Sam Adams was running a group known as the Sons of Liberty , who were determined to stop the British from taking advantage of their rights. The East India Company sent three ships accross the Atlantic into the colonies. The Elanor, the Dartmouth , and the Beaver. The Boston Harbor was the only port that allowed these ships to dock. However, there was a standoff for two weeks. Due to all the contraversy taking place, the ships could neither unload their tea nor turn back out to sea. Finally , on December 16 , the Patriots, dressed up as Mohawk native Americans, the British ships. Within a few hours , the Sons of Liberty threw thousands of pounds of British tea off of the ships and into the Boston harbor. Thousands of protestors looked on as witnesses to this event. This led to other events inspiring other colonists to stick up for themselves and realize that independance can be achieved. They thought, maybe we can become Americans instead of colonists. So, on December 16th , you should drink a Sam Adams beer and be thankful that us Americans are here today largely in part because of this patriotic man. Our American hero , Sam Adams . |
