Growing Old, Growing Young

Then…

14 was change

New school, new friends

14 was freedom

Wearing whatever I wanted:

Boy clothes, girl clothes, mohawks and chains

but…

14 was drama

Matching clothes, perfect hair, new shoes

Everything had to be perfect

Life or death phone calls at 10 pm

14 was stress

Hard work, hard tests

Hard people to deal with

Assholes, whiners, preps and punks and jocks

14 was new

14 was scary

At 14 I grew up



Now…

40 is constancy

Same job, same friends

40 is conformity

Low heels, tame hair

Same old suit that almost looks good

but…

40 is comfort

Sneakers, short hair,

T-shirts and stretchy pants

Soft, warm bed to sleep in at night

40 is relaxing

Some work, some fun

Bars, the beach, the city

Enough of everything needed

40 is old

40 is familiar

At 40 I grew young
