A poem about environmental destruction.
We poison our air with our industry
We ruin our water with our junk
With our trash we destroy our forestry
On our power we seem to be drunk

I wonder if you can realize
The extent to which you have destroyed
The nature you tend to idealize
Has become utterly devoid.

The creatures that once roamed the undergrowth
Have vanished into the night
And although you are welcome to try both
Neither science nor magic can undo your blight

You preserve the waterfalls and the rivers
The mountains and the canyons
Yet of the area around you conserve only slivers
Not grasping that they are companions

Nature is not just a thing
It’s a system- infinitely complex
To one part you cannot just cling
For all other aspects it effects

You seem to be utterly ignorant
You think the earth is a toy for your play
You don’t understand just how brilliant
It can be to see the flying bird-of-prey

I wish I could make you see
I wish I could pound into your head
At least to some tolerable degree
That destruction does not stop but will spread

It’s easy for you to justify
Killing just one little plant
But each strike against nature will intensify
Extinction’s merciless chant

One day you will arise
Looking forward to the new day
And suddenly you will be shocked with surprise
When you realize it’s all gone away

There will be no more lakes you can play in
No more grass in which to roll
All you’ll be left with is ripped animal skin
And it will be time to worry about population control

With ruined dirt and ruined life
Good luck attempting to survive
Exist in a world full of tumultuous strife
I don’t think you’ll continue to strive

If you take charge now and try to fix the past
I’ll give you one last chance to change
You may beat back your own bomb blast
If you fail you will be stepping in your own firing range.
