Chapter 1

WHO WAS THIS MAN? Why were there nails driven through his ankles and wrists? What was the large, oddly-shaped piece of wood that he was nailed to? Who would do something like this? Why would they do it? Did this man deserve it? Did he do something wrong? Was he some kind of criminal? Was this how they punished criminals wherever this man came from? What could he have done to deserve such brutal treatment? Did he deserve this punishment? Did anyone deserve to die in such a fashion? Did any crime merit such a punishment? Was this man a criminal?

He didn't look like it.

Strangely enough, though he was nailed to a slab of wood and slowly bleeding to death, this man seemed calm. His head was resting on his chest and his breathing was steady, albeit labored. His hair clung to his neck, soaked with blood and sweat, and on his brow was a crown of thorns. This man also bore many wounds, including a large puncture in his side, as if from a spear.
