A normal day in Iraq
Spending time in a sand box.
Charging handle pulled back
as the bolt locks.
This is what fills the time between tic tocks.

Lock, cock, and load as the tires roll.
Buried IED not seen in its hole.
White light burns bright, melts helmet to skull.
This kind of life will take its toll.

Staring at the starvation of people in need.
Young people impoverished, plead.
"So called" leaders say, no these kids you can't feed.
I still break bread despite those that lead.

I can't sleep quite right
With bombs bursting all night.
Mortar tube man fires, hidden from sight.
These prayers I write, to reveal my plight.
