Tacoma Community College 4th Annual Juried Art Exhibit, Tacoma Washington
Local Art Exhibit

It looked as if the goose laid the golden egg at Tacoma Community Colleges' 4th
Annual Juried Art Exhibit.
The large egg-like cone entitled Sybarite sat upon various pieces of clear
glass and was the most provocative art piece in the show. Artist Traci Kelly
created two such entries among the exhibition artworks.
Speaking of artworks, several exhibits were definitely labor intensive works of art.
A few merited the the term "artsy".
There was the traditional art pieces of paintings, a few abstracts, photography,
and then some exhibits which challenged the viewer as well as the media.
I had a few favorites. Artist Starr Wetzel's traditional clay pottery enhanced by
color and texture was a success. The two exhibits entitled Curved Space
and Contained Space stood out catching my attention although already
placed in the middle of the room. The somewhat abstract Head Dancers
of blue and aqua hues by Noel DeBord struck me as ART, about the only artwork
in the show to do so. Artist Karin Williams', a ballet instructor, painting
Kneecap affected me as connection of bones which made me ask myself
is this the way it feels to be a ballerina?
Bill Colby's painting in white and subtle blues was nice, titledAbove Timberline.
The long black and white banner made of spun Asian papers created an interesting
textile weave that would add flair to anyones contemporary interior was the work of artist Carolyn Price Dyer.
Yes there were exhibits that I found questionable. A good silver gelatin print could
have used a better title. Some paintings captured this viewer by their sheer large
size, but disappointed me because the drawings were too dark, too simplistic in
design or the use of primary colors and another appeared blurry.
The presentation in the Gallery on the college campus located at 6501 So. 19th St.
Tacoma Washington, remains open until August 11, 2006. Gallery hours are
Monday through Thursday, 10 am to 5 pm. Admission is free.
