Rainy day. It drummed and spattered in the patio.
The roof spout spewed a sparkling stream
of run-off water.
I put a red sweater on
that I bought for Valentines day
and I wore my silver cross even though
no one was there to see it
and put some music on,
some jazz flute, and lay on the couch.
The flute sang solo arabesques into the air.
the cross lay over my heart on the red sweater
and I could feel my heart glow red and warm like glowing coal
The rain grew heavy, thrumming on the roof,
the jazz bass was thrumming, poom poom poom
and the cross lay heavy on my chest
like the iron meteor my mother keeps
on her dining table.
Jazz drummer goes shishy shish on the snare drum with metal brushes,
and shing shing on the cymbals.
There was a pool of warm red blood on my chest.
Crazy jazz flutist huffs and moans into the flute
I hesitantly touch my chest.
Just the cool silver cross is there
Next time I think I'll wear the cross
on my black sweater.
A shining silver star in a black and glowing cosmos ....
