Architecture can be powerful.
A Building Struck Me

Old Hull, Quebec. September 1, 2006.

The corner turns
To sudden threat:

Surging up from asphalt,
A concrete fortress
Shocks into sight.

Huge, blunt tower, featureless,
Charges, thrusts toward me,
Stunning my consciousness.

Wake to faceless head of Sphinx,
Teutonic-helmed,
Hefted by straining shoulders,
Multi-storied body's stretch.

Hindquarters curving, massive,
Down through falling floors,
Reveal a shadowy opening
Which I must penetrate
To do my shopping.

A picture of the building that inspired this poem is visible at
Pictures. Mostly connected to my poems. Open in new Window. (E)
Selected photographs.
