That Boyish Smile

He pledged to hold forever dear her heart,
and though she saw it never reached his eyes,
he charmed her spirit with his boyish smile.

Too late, she learned, beneath the winsome smile,
lay fangs honed sharp by shameless, vengeful heart,
and liquid courage glazed his cold blue eyes.

No longer seeking softness in those eyes,
nor hint of tenderness behind the smile,
she waits for death’s caress upon her heart.

Would that her heart not caught the eyes behind that boyish smile.
