Shakespear's "All the world's a stage" in a new world. |
THE PROLOGUE When I typed in this poem, I couldn't add a prologue to this poem, which was neces- sary. Now everything is bought and sold, except the air we breath in. And there has been proliferation of malls, markets & marts for this purpose. We've come a long way from a staging world to a shopping world. In the context of today's world, you'll find the following lines relevant. And now read on.... All the world's a shop, And all the men and women merely shoppers; They have their exits and their entrances; And one man in his time shops many things, His markets being seven types. At first tthe infant, Kissing and sucking from the feeding bottle. And tthen the whining school-boy, with his mobile, And playing computer games, riding on a two- wheelers Unwillingly to school. And then the lover, Dancing like crazy, with a romantic tune Made to his darling's delight. Then a fighter, Full of worldly dreams, and acted like the hero, Positive in success, sudden and quick in thought, Seeking the bubble reputation, Just from ladies' mouths. And then the the wise, To save money for the old lonely days, With eyes forward, and faced like a sage, Full of worldly values and useful thought; And so he plays a miser. The sixth age shifts Into a pensioner and family's protection, With grandchildren on laps and shoulders, His youthful earnings well-saved, a world too woeful For his shrunk income; and his big manly cash, Turning again toward teenager's penny, practises To whittle down his expenses. Last scene of all, That ends this strong shopping career, In second childishness and mere expectation, Sans sons, sans daughters, sans society, sans everyone. ___________ |
