Sometimes we all do it. |
"You're missing it." The familiar voice echoed in the silence behind me. I knew I was before he had said anything. I clenched my teeth as I focused harder. The objects of our attention moved with utter disregard for their viewers. But that wouldn't be surprising at all considering they had no idea that they were under scrutiny. They exchanged some words, one of them gave a soft laugh. I don't see what it is he wants me to see, this all seems like normal activity from those we watch. "And.." from the inflection in his voice, I knew i had missed it completely now "..you missed it." My first reaction was to get angry, but I had to think back and remember what we watched, see if I could pull out the meaning behind it. "Its not that you aren't looking hard enough, its that you're looking." He sounded self-gratified, as if those words would make me see it. "I don't understand." I said to give in, hoping he would reveal the answer to me. But like always, he didn't, so I let out a sigh at another chance for knowledge wasted and turned to him. "Why do we even watch these people? What are we to gain from observing their actions?" Its a conversation I had had before with him, but the futility in it all still left me questioning. He took in a breath, he wasn't happy I had asked him again, but was preparing to tell me, give me again the same reason he had given me many times before. "Because one day you will be with them, believe me, which you wont, or not." It sounded ridiculous every time those words entered my head. "How will I be with them? How could one of us be with them?" He shook his head. "There are ways. There are always ways. But if you do arrive with them. You will be with them forever, so you might as well try to learn a little about them. Maybe even how they interact with each other." There it was. The thing we had been looking at, he had wanted me to see what was said, to familiarize myself with the dialect and the customs. I pulled back the memory of the scene and listened. The taller one had said something to the smaller one and the smaller one gave a laugh. I sounded out the words in my head as i listened to the taller one say it again and again. It had to be a sentence to bring ease, hence the laughter. "I think I get it a little now." With a curt nod he looked at me approvingly. "Good. Now lets go back home." I was all for heading home, but I felt a tickling sensation. I frowned and looked around. "Whats the matter?" He said looking back to me. "I don't know... I feel wierd." Just then everything around me shifted and started to spin. I felt pulled, drawn, attracted to somewhere. My gaze drifted around until I saw what bound me with this desire to go to it. It was one we watched before, although it was kneeling in a dark room. Its mouth was working in what looked like words but none of the ones I had heard come from one we watched before. It spoke words that I understood, words of the watchers. "Come to me. Join me. Welcome me. Become me." I smirked at the oddity of the words but still drew near. The elder watcher that was with me all but forgotten. I didn't know what to do really. Ones we watched couldn't hear us, couldn't see us. But it knows how we speak, so maybe this one can? "I am here." I said softly, if it could sense me it made no indication. I reached out, hesitated a moment, and then touched it on the shoulder. Instantly it stopped chanting and turned to me, its eyes darted but couldn't see. I frowned. Its eyes weren't normal, they were red and had more fluid in them then normal. It then said something in their words and then turned quickly to begin its rhythmic stringing of random words together. Although after I listened for a time, they weren't random at all. They all had to do with it wanting something. I suddenly had the thought that maybe it was calling to me. That all of those words were directed to me. I stared more at the watched that tried to call to me. I had several questions now. How did it know our words? Why did i respond when no other watchers did? And why were its eyes so different? Although I didn't think its eyes had anything to do with the other two questions, it was an anomaly I felt should worth noting. I was getting tired of hearing the same words over again in a string so I tried touching it again. This time with drastically different results. My hand reached out and touched its shoulder. Not just touched, but I felt it touch, I felt the contact. Its body went rigid and its head slowly turned to me. I could see the look of recognition in its eyes instantly as it turned quickly and put its head down to the floor. I retracted my hand and looked at it funnily. As much as I could remember, a watcher had never touched a watched before. I noticed something else immediately also. Everything was different. For one, I was standing on the stones of the floor. I felt the pressure of the floor, I felt the air, I felt cold. I looked around and found that I was constrained by moving too fast. My body all of the sudden had momentum and restrictions. What happened? My musings were broken from the sounds of its voice in front of me. It looked scared and uncertain. I tried to think of something to do as it just stared at me, and instantly I remembered the exchange from early. Yes, something to ease what was happening. It was a good thing I had memorized the saying of it thanks to the elder watcher. 'And thats when the horse bit me.' I smiled after I had finished saying it perfectly but in front of me the watched body froze completely, it no longer spoke, it no longer breathed, it just stared at me. In the air the elder watcher looked on as his pupil had been summoned by a distraught female sorceress. He was happy to see that by far the worst of his pupils was now out of his hair but he watched the first moments of his former student's new existence in the mortal world. 'And thats when the horse bit me.' The elder hit his hand to his forehead and sighed. "You completely missed the point." |
