A two part short story this is the first one.
Street corners dimed in the night, with the occasional light jutting out into the darkness like a shiv. Many people have walked down this way, but who knows how many have survived. I step lightly as buildings rise on either side of me, and I step sideways to avoid walking in the light. I don't know, maybe the light may cut me or expose me because I'm oh so comfortable here in the darkness. The sounds of my shoes scraping the asphalt grind my ears but I don't ever notice, how could I? I am so caught up in my own little world my own petty thoughts to realize anything. I don't notice that I'm in the dark, and I don't notice the countless bodies some barely moving some as still as the road that I am walking on.
Then upon turning a corner something catches my attention from the side. It was a book covered in a soft velvety cloth, but I couldn't reach it. The problem: It was in the glow of a street light. I couldn't just ignore a lonely book sitting there so still, and you could say that in a way I pitied the book when I should've pitied myself but like compliments I've never fished for charity.
I was preplexed, how do I get the book out of the light without exposing too much of myself? So I took my shoes off and tied the strings together to make the shoes reach farther. I stood at the edge of the light and while holding on to one shoe I proceeded to make the other one catch on the other side of the book and drag it towards me, but I couldn't do it. Time wasn't a factor it was always dark. Well I guess because I never really noticed. I had been standing there for quite some time when I finally decieded to run through the light really quickly and kick the book into the dark oblivion surrounding me. I ran into the light but as I did so I closed my eyes. I remember quite well where the book was, but when I kicked it it didn't budge. It was like trying to kick a building to the ground. So I tripped as my forward momentum carried me the rest of the way. I fell on my face on the other side from where I had started, but now my face was bleeding. I gave up. I went and sat down in the middle of the light, I didn't care what things that haunte me might find me I just wanted to read the book.
